Our Heavyweights

We are proud to report that we (officially) have one baby that is 5 lbs! Ethan's cast was soaked and removed sometime in the middle of the night last night before it was re-cast this morning. They weighed him this time without his cast. He weighs 2280 grams--a little over 5 lbs. Sydney is doing well herself. We thought she had passed Ethan up in weight, but she is 2190 grams or 4 lbs 13 oz. That seems huge to us...until we look at the baby in the next bed that was huge.

At 7 am this morning we went to watch Dr. Faux re-cast Ethan's foot. It was fun to see his leg without a cast for a few minutes but we quickly noticed that Ethan did not like us to touch his foot or leg. Dr. Faux had told us that his skin would become really sensitive, but we didn't think it would be this fast! Ironically, he seemed to calm down when he had a cast back on his leg--which Dr. Faux also said would happen (but I didn't really believe that he would like to have a cast on his leg). Amazing. The other amazing news--Ethan's foot was easily turned to midline (or straight)! After only 1 week of a cast. Dr. Faux said that Ethan may not need to have the surgery to cut his achilles tendon after the 6 weeks of casting are over. That was great news. (My co-worker told me that it was pretty awful to hear his son screaming when he had the procedure done.) Here's a photo of his foot after 1 week of casting. We think it looked better--here's a little before and after photo from birth to after his first casting.

Jan 23rd at birth...

Today...

A cute video of him relaxing after the casting. He was really chill for the whole thing once we stopped touching his leg with our hands. I held his foot and leg while the doctor put on the cast. Thank goodness he held still.

They are both up on their feedings. Ethan to 45 cc (1.5 ounces) and Sydney to 43 cc. We are evaluated tomorrow for nutritive feedings at 1 pm. We're a lot more confident that they will both do well. Ethan is definitely doing better, but we think Sydney will catch up quickly once she is off her high flow oxygen. It is just in the way. She was awake for both feedings today. That was great news. We think Ethan got quite a bit extra in his belly tonight...he was awake and squirming after his non-nutritive feeding at 4 pm. Here's a shot of him after the feeding.

The bad news of the day is that I have caught a bug of some kind. I had to wear a mask to feed them today so I don't get other babies sick in the nursery. It is a complete bummer. I stayed home today working from home so I could take an afternoon nap. Despite having 2 babies in the hospital, I am up all night as if I was feeding them in order to bring them my milk. I know that I am really low on sleep. Wish there were more hours in the day...

I have missed coming to see them so much now that I have been working, and lately full time. You should come get some spice for life Ree. I started a bad cold but it was better in 24 hours without any other cold aids. This stuff is amazing. They are getting cuter and cuter every day-so adorable!! Thanks for the daily posts-I check them every morning before work.

did they weigh Ethan after they put his cast on too so you know about what the cast weighs?

My Question is the same as the previous one - how much does the cast weigh?

The nurses and doctors said that it is 'not as accurate' if they deduct the weight of the cast. Doug and I were going to have them weigh it when we were there yesterday, but were distracted and forgot. We'll have to do it again next week when he gets the new cast.
